Maximilian de Winter recently lost his wife Rebecca. He arrives in Monte Carlo, where he meets Mrs. Van Hopper and her young companion. Gradually, Maximilian becomes so fascinated by the young person that he eventually marries her. He and the newly married Mrs de Winter return to Manderley, the de Winter family estate in Cornwall. There, the girl begins to be haunted and oppressed by Rebecca's presence, which she finds in absolutely everything.
