Young man Todd Hewitt lives with his adoptive parents Ben and Killian (men, because all the women were killed by an unknown microbe). Prentisstown is a town in the New World, on a planet colonized by earthlings. Each person here hears the thoughts of others through the so-called noise - a flow of images, words and sounds that does not leave any personal secrets. One day, Todd discovers a place of absolute silence, and also meets a hitherto unseen miracle - a living girl.
