The action of the film unfolds immediately after the First World War. Major of the French army Delaplan set himself a noble and practically impossible task: to help the relatives of those who went missing during the war, to search for the missing - all of them, about 350,000 people. During the search, he meets a young rich Parisian woman, Irene, who is unsuccessfully looking for her missing husband. At first, there is a mutual dislike between them, but soon the major's determination and courage make Irene reconsider her attitude towards him.
