Ambitious journalist Max Brackett, forced to work for one of the local California TV channels, dreams of sensational material. During a routine report from the Natural History Museum, he witnesses a conflict between the director of the institution, Mrs. Banks, and a former security guard, Sam Bailey, who wants his job back. Unable to convince the director with words, Sam pulls out a gun and begins threatening her, which ends up seriously wounding another guard and taking everyone in the museum hostage (except Mrs. Banks, who is a group of children on a field trip). Max tries to report directly from the captured building, but cannot hide for long. After his discovery, he offers Sam to do an exclusive interview in which he could explain in detail the motives of his act. Little by little, the journalist begins to manipulate the simple-minded terrorist and build a certain image of him in the eyes of the public ...
