The Babushkas of Chernobyl
The Babushkas of Chernobyl
About 100 women will not leave their native homes in the radioactive Chernobyl exclusion zone. While most of their neighbors have long since moved out and the men have died, this stubborn company of women is still holding on – and no longer knows grief – living on a poisonous land. Why don't they leave the villages that the Ukrainian state and radiologists have declared unfit for life? How do they manage to make ends meet on their own in this abandoned territory, guarded by the military and inhabited by wild animals? How have they been affected by radiation over the past 29 years?
