An adult Apu, having become an orphan, lives in a miserable room in Calcutta and aspires to become a writer. His friend Pulu invites him to his sister Aparna's wedding in a small Bengali village. However, the bride's happiness does not last long - the groom turns out to be crazy. And if she does not get married at the appointed time, she will be disgraced forever. In protest, the bewildered Apu marries the girl and takes his young wife with him to the city. A year later, his wife dies in childbirth, leaving Apu with a son, whom he does not want to see at first. Only five years later, his friend finds him and persuades him to take care of the child...
