Summer of 1910. Several tourists vacationing on the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coast have disappeared without a trace. Inspectors Mashan and Malfoy believe that these mysterious events are connected to a quiet bay where the Brafor family of ferrymen lives, led by a father nicknamed the Immortal. There, in their own mansion, the van Petegemov family, decadent bourgeois, spends every summer. The clans are at war, and young Malyuta Brefor and Billy van Peteghem are in love with each other, like Romeo and Juliet. Detective and romantic stories are intertwined and strengthened by the fact that one of the families is entirely cannibals, and the other is entirely thieves.
