The idea for the film originated in Kavanagh back in 1969, when she was shooting a three-part documentary about concentration camps during the Third Reich and, in particular, about Dachau. There she met an old woman who, being a prisoner of this camp, fell madly in love with a German guard officer. Liliana decided to learn more about such fundamentally shocking psychological situations that revive and at the same time kill humanity in the hell of concentration camps. The result of this kind of historical and psychological research was "The Night Porter".
